Fomepizole Application Scope

Guidelines for the Use of Fomepizole

  • Dosage and Administration: Administer intravenously. The initial dose is 15 mg/kg, followed by 10 mg/kg every 12 hours for four doses, then 15 mg/kg every 12 hours thereafter. Adjust dosing during hemodialysis.

  • Adverse Reactions: Common side effects include headache, nausea, dizziness, increased drowsiness, and a bad or metallic taste.

  • Contraindications: Contraindicated in patients with a history of serious hypersensitivity reactions to fomepizole or other pyrazoles.

  • Precautions: Do not administer undiluted or by bolus injection due to the risk of venous irritation. Avoid using polycarbonate syringes or needles, as fomepizole can interact with polycarbonate materials.

Interactions

  • Drug Interactions: Fomepizole is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes and can induce its own metabolism. Concurrent use with alcohol may decrease the elimination rate of both substances.
